“Now, Where Were We?”
Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
That’s the kind of question you ask when your conversation has beenacts interrupted by your children. It’s also what has happened to our series from the Book of Acts on Sunday mornings. Christmas interrupted our Acts series, but we are back to it beginning this Sunday. So, where were we in Acts?
We’ve learned about a lot of “firsts” in the Christian church:
* The first day of the church on Pentecost.
* The first Christian sermon by Peter.
* The first ways the church fellowshipped together.
* The first persecution.
* The first healing of a lame or paralyzed man by someone other than Jesus.
* The first time a Christian was beaten for his faith in Christ.
* The first martyr.
* The first true “hater” of Christians converted to the Christian faith (Paul).
Yet, Acts isn’t just an historical account of “firsts.” There are real lessons to learn for us because we see how the first Christians in Acts began to live for Christ. They are examples to us to live for His glory. So, how do we then live?
We learned…
* There are building blocks for our lives: teaching, praying, generosity, fellowship (Acts 2).
* We should pray to shake up our lives as well as other people’s (Acts 4 after persecution).
* The importance of listening to God (The Sanhedrin of Acts 4).
* We can’t fool God (Ananias & Sapphira).
* Dying well as Christians is our last act of faith (Stephen).
As we turn once again to Acts 9, you’ll notice God does 3 miraculous, supernatural things: converts Paul, heals a paralyzed man, and raises a dead woman. Ask yourself these questions: Does God still do the miraculous today? Why does God do miracles? What if God doesn’t give me a miracle? Is something wrong with me?
Come Sunday to explore these questions and more. I look forward to worshipping with my eternal family this Sunday.
Blessings,
Pastor Mike
