Ephesians 4:17-32
God has emotions
- God has “regrets” – Genesis 6:6
- God is “brokenhearted” – Hosea 11:8
- God “weeps” – Jeremiah 14:17
- God gets “angry” – 1 Kings 11:9
- God “hates” – Romans 9:13
- God “loves” – John 3:16
- God is “jealous” – Exodus 20:5
- Jesus will “spit people out of his mouth” – Revelation 3:16
Why would God grieve?
- It always boils down to sin
- Genesis 6:6 “And the LORD was sorry that he made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart”
- Israel in Isaiah 63:10 “But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit; there fore he turned to be their enemy, and himself fought against them.”
- Jesus weeping for Jerusalem in Matthew 23:37
- Look at this passage
How do we know we are grieving the HS?
- Closeness to God takes a hit — James 4:7-10
- The devil has more room to work in us — v 27
- We start to “Rot” — v29
What stops His grieving?
- Obvious answer is we stop sinning and confess sin
- Learn about Jesus — v20
- Absolutely trust in the Holy Spirit’s power
